6 Days Mount Kilimanajaro Trek - Machame Route

[wpseo_breadcrumb]

The Machame Route is widely regarded as the most picturesque way to ascend Kilimanjaro. Here, all your gear is carried by porters, and a dedicated cook prepares your meals. Unlike the Marangu Route, which offers hut accommodations, Machame provides an authentic camping experience, making it ideal for the more adventurous trekker. This route, also known as the “Whiskey Route,” is a six-day journey that rewards hikers with breathtaking scenery, including stunning sunsets at Shira and the awe-inspiring Barranco Wall. The gradual ascent of Machame allows for optimal acclimatization, with a highlight being the climb to Lava Tower at 4630m on day three, followed by a descent to Barranco Camp at 3950m. This strategic altitude variation is key to a successful acclimatization process.

A Scenic Adventure: Trekking Through the Machame Route

This itinerary highlights the remarkable journey through the Machame Route on Mount Kilimanjaro.

Day One: Embarking on the Expedition

  • Moshi to Machame Gate (1,800m/5,905ft) to Machame Camp (3,000m/9,840ft)
  • Distance: 10 kilometers
  • Elevation Gain: 1,200 meters

Depart Moshi and head towards Machame Gate, where you’ll meet your supportive team of porters, guides, and cooks who will be your companions for the next week. After registering for the climb, delve into the expedition by trekking through the moss-covered trees of Kilimanjaro’s unique cloud forest. Ascend to Machame Camp, enjoying the changing vegetation along the way. Weather permitting, witness the panoramic view of the surrounding area and your ultimate goal – the majestic Kibo Peak.

Day Two: Higher Grounds and Scenic Vistas

  • Machame Camp (3,000m/9,840ft) to Shira Camp (3,840m/12,600ft)
  • Distance: 7 kilometers
  • Elevation Gain: 840 meters

Considered a relatively easier day, this trek still involves several uphill sections. Be sure to carry sufficient water, especially on a clear day when the exposed trail can get warm. Breathtaking viewpoints offer glimpses of the plains and forests below, contrasted by the towering peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. As you gain altitude, observe the shift in vegetation. The towering trees diminish, replaced by Kilimanjaro’s characteristic high-altitude flora. After a satisfying lunch, continue your ascent to the Shira Plateau, formed by ancient lava flows from Kibo. Finally, reach Shira Camp, where you can relax and take in the awe-inspiring views of Kibo to the west and Mount Meru to the east.

Day Three: Strategic Acclimatization

  • Shira Camp (3,840m/12,600ft) to Barranco Camp (3,950m/12,960ft)
  • Distance: 10 kilometers
  • Elevation Gain: 690 meters

This day’s itinerary strategically incorporates an up-and-down pattern, culminating in a modest elevation gain. Despite the final elevation being only 110 meters higher, you’ll reach a height of 4,530 meters before descending to Barranco Camp. This strategic approach is crucial for successful acclimatization. Following breakfast, embark on a hike eastward across the Shira Plateau until reaching the junction for the Shira and Lemosho Routes. Continue through the barren landscape before stopping for lunch. Shortly after, reach the highest point before a swift descent to Barranco Camp. Faster hikers can opt for a detour via Lava Tower, a fascinating 300-foot lava formation jutting out from the mountainside. Nestled amidst stands of Senecio Kilimanjari, Barranco Camp is widely considered the most scenic campsite on the Machame Route.

Day Four: Conquering the Barranco Wall

  • Barranco Camp (3,950m/12,960ft) to Karanga Valley (4,200m/13,780ft)
  • Distance: 7 kilometers
  • Elevation Gain: 250 meters

Depart Barranco Camp after breakfast, geared up to tackle the Barranco Wall. This section presents the most challenging part of the day, requiring the use of your hands for certain sections to pull yourself up. Once you reach the top, enjoy a brief descent into the greener Karanga Valley. The campsite is typically set on the ridge above the valley, promoting optimal acclimatization.

Day Five: Reaching the Base Camp for the Summit Push

  • Karanga Valley (4,200m/13,780ft) to Barafu Camp (4,600m/15,100ft)
  • Distance: 6 kilometers
  • Elevation Gain: 400 meters

Following breakfast, commence the trek towards Barafu Camp. Along the way, witness several of Kibo’s glaciers and the junction connecting the descent route, Mweka, with the Machame trail. Keep an eye out for the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers during your day four hike. While the path to Barafu traverses an alpine desert with minimal vegetation, Barafu Camp itself offers stunning visuals of Kibo and Mawenzi. To maximize your chances of summit success, aim for an early night after dinner, as the summit push begins before midnight.

Day Six: Summit Day and Descent to Mweka Camp (continued)

  • Barafu Camp (4,600m/15,100ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m/19,340ft) to Mweka Camp (3,100m/10,170ft)
  • Distance: 18 kilometers
  • Elevation Gain: 1,295 meters
  • Elevation Loss: 2,795 meters

Embarking on the Summit Push:

Around midnight, begin your highly anticipated ascent to Uhuru Peak, the crown jewel of Africa. For the next six hours, navigate the challenging terrain by headlamp. The ascent to the crater rim is the most demanding part of the entire trek. The path is very steep until you reach Stella Point. The final stretch from Stella Point to Uhuru Peak is a gradual climb and, in terms of difficulty, less strenuous. However, the high altitude makes this a long and tiring endeavor. Allocate roughly an hour to complete the crater rim hike.

Reaching the Summit and Witnessing Breathtaking Vistas:

Upon reaching the pinnacle, Uhuru Peak, capture this momentous occasion with photos alongside your guide and fellow trekkers. Savor the triumph of reaching the highest point in Africa before commencing the descent to Mweka Camp. As you make your way down from Uhuru, take a moment to appreciate the surrounding mountains, the expansive crater, the cloud formations, and the majestic glaciers.

Regrouping at Barafu Camp and Continuing the Descent:

Back at Barafu Camp, enjoy a well-deserved breakfast and a short break to regain your strength. Remember, you still have a 3-5 hour trek ahead to reach Mweka Camp.

Day Seven: Farewell to Kilimanjaro

  • Mweka Camp (3,100m/10,170ft) to Mweka Gate (1,500m/4,920ft)
  • Distance: 10 kilometers
  • Elevation Loss: 1,600 meters

After a nourishing breakfast, embark on your final leg, descending to Mweka Gate. This beautiful route winds through Kilimanjaro’s captivating cloud forest. Be cautious while navigating the trail, as it can be slippery at times. Your transportation will be waiting at Mweka Gate to take you back to Moshi. Celebrate your accomplishment and enjoy the opportunity to purchase souvenirs like t-shirts and refreshments at the gate.
